Build Me Up

by Cait

We haven’t made any moves on our build-ins yet (I’m pretty sure I’m going to run out of build-in title ideas before we even finish planning ours), but I love, love, love the ones in Emily at Merrypad’s dining room and had to share.  (Also, how awesome is that mirror?  Emily’s is made from salvaged barn wood, but I totally need to make one of those from the pallet wood I have laying around!)  Anyone who hasn’t seen her blog yet should head over to check that out!

I love the chunkiness of Emily’s shelves (read more about how she accomplished that here).  The thickness of the outside edges was something that drew me to the Expedits we planned to use in the first place, so I guess that tells me I want substantial looking shelves.  I also love the way the wall color is clearly visible between the shelves.  I’m debating between leaving the wall behind our future build-ins yellow, or painting that wall a bold color.  What do y’all think?

  1. Hey there! What a nice surprise – thanks for your kind words! Good luck with your own built-ins – it’s way easier than I ever thought!

    • You’re welcome, Emily!

Thanks for the encouragement! I think the first step is going to be convincing Robert to help me move the Expedits to the art room, so that he gets annoyed with the empty walls ;)

  2. I love the chunky shelves as well – I say if you are looking for a statement, go ahead and paint the back a fun color! I left mine white because the room was already dark brown and had lots of colored accessories, I needed some white to lighten it up.

    • Thanks Sara! I’m having trouble deciding what color I want to paint the back, so I may just leave it yellow. Also? I totally love your build-ins (and house, and … well, everything). Sigh. So many choices!
